Tinnitus

Tinnitus is defined as an involuntary sound that originates in the head or ears. It is common and 7% of the UK population have gone to their GPs regarding it (MRC data). It is rarely a symptom of anything sinister but it is important to seek advice because sufferers can be helped. It is important at an early stage of perception that the sufferer is aware there are many ways to alleviate tinnitus annoyance, before it becomes distressing.

Tinnitus is perceived as a “hissing” “buzzing” or “whistling”, not always associated with the ears. In fact the word ‘tinnitus’ is derived from the Latin ‘to ring’. It is often modulated by a beat. Tinnitus is frequently associated with hearing loss and hearing aids may be the best solution for managing tinnitus.
